Don't Walk Away, There'll be Better Days
As a kid, whenever I was having a bad day, exasperated with the state of our country and the way the world was going, I would proclaim "This is ridiculous. I'm moving to Australia!" I got the Australia idea from a book titled "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." I eventually learned, as Alexander did, that they have bad days and and imperfect government and social system in Australia too. And, I extrapolated, every other country on Earth. So, I decided I would need to leave the planet, and move to Mars instead.
That stuck around for a few years, but now that Mars is becoming more popular, and thus will be more populated and plagued with all the same problems as Earth, I need a new destination once again. So, in recent weeks, Titan (Saturn's largest moon) has become my "corrupt-government-free-low-population-no-problems-whatsoever" residence of choice.
I'm going to have a problem though. (OK, there are a lot of really big problems, namely, getting there, breathing, and not freezing, just to name a few.) But I foresee that Titan is also going to become popular soon. NASA is sending a robot helicopter to explore Titan, and soon after I expect it will become quite a popular little moon. So I'll be out of a escape location once again.
Now, obviously, I know that moving to another planet isn't an option, and a better choice would be to do what I can to make the world a better place, even if it's only for one person (see my post You Won't Change the World for my full thought on this). But today, for the first time, I really internalized this.
The Piano Guys posted a new video this morning, titled "Better Days". Near the middle it goes:
"Self-quarantine, all the memes, isolation
Got me going crazy
Conspiracies, mysteries, following history
Bad news on the daily
If one door opens and another one closes
When life aint smelling like a garden full of roses
Low key on the inside crying
Don't just walk away
So don't quit
Keep trying
There'll be better days"
Don't just walk away. So don't quit, keep trying. There'll be better days.
When something is going wrong, when it's hard or uncomfortable, or we don't want to deal with it, I would guess most of us, myself included, have a natural inclination to just walk away. To leave, to give up. To say "It's not worth it."
"Stand up
Keep walking
There'll be better days
When you're losing your winning
You're drowning keep swimming
Come what may
So keep your head up
And keep smiling
There'll be better days
Do you believe in good things to come?
Don't chase the storms, just follow the Son
Some blessings come soon
And some come late
And some come in Heaven
So don't quit
Keep trying
There'll be better days"
